It Takes a Village
Rescuing equines (even mini ones) is not an easy job. It takes knowledge, experience, physical strength, and a big heart. Most importantly, it takes a community of volunteers. Delivering superior care through volunteers and providing the safest environment for miniature donkeys and horses comes first at HOME
Building trust and respect is a two-way process, and people at HOME create an environment where neglected, abused, and abandoned miniature horses and donkeys can heal and connect.
While most minis will find their lifetime home, some will stay at HOME forever.

HOME Haven is a part of the rescue that provides long-term sanctuary (lifetime) care to minis that may have a harder time finding their forever place. Currently, there are eight animals in this program. They all have some health issues, making them unlikely to be adopted. For example, two are blind; one has allergies to everything except orchard grass, while another has shoulder pain that requires medications and regular body therapy.
Visiting HOME and meeting Lori and Barb was such an amazing experience. While taking the facility tour, we got a first-hand experience of how knowledge, experience, and heart come together in their work. We noticed how carefully they approached insecure minis, how well-timed their advance-retreat technique was, and how balanced they were in their energy and body language. Watching them communicate with the minis tells a story louder than any blog post can ever do.
